Problem. What is a problem? It can be an intricate unsettled question or a source of perplexity and distress. We are faced with these daily. Big or small it doesn’t really matter. These problems can prove to be troublesome and they need to be dealt with smartly. Every problem has a solution. It will be tough to figure it out, that is why it is problem. But figuring it out and taking the required action is all it takes to solve your problems. One of the best skills you can master in your life is the art of problem solving.
To handle a problem you need to know the type of problem you are dealing with. Peter Drucker, who was a modern philosophical educator and author, described 4 types of problems. The first type is the truly generic problem, which are the most common problems throughout the world. They might seem different but their root cause is the same, for instance overpopulation. The second type is the generic ones, but these are unique in the ways individuals face it and deal with it, like personal problems. The third type consists of the exceptional problems, which are new and unheard of, like the problem of lack of fresh water sources in Cape Town. Lastly, there are the new emerging problems which will become truly generic, for instance the climate change problems. So recognize your problems and then only will you be able to set aside a solution for these.
Drucker also gave a five step problem solving formula. It is very simple and try using this the next time you are faced with a problem.
Step one- The realisation that this problem will repeat again and again, until you start using a rule or a principle that you will follow. This makes you think long term and is obviously better, as we need to solve the problem permanently.
Step two- Define the solutions thoroughly. Consider the advantages as well as the disadvantages of the solution you want to use. Make sure this solution doesn’t negatively affect something else. Think about all the possible solutions calmly. Don’t act in haste.
Step three- Make sure the solution your shortlist in the second step will actually solve the whole problem. Think about the solution working out in the real world and how will you tackle with its consequences.
Step four- Make a list of the actions you need to carry out that solution. This consists of time management too. Sort the list according to priority.
Step five- The last step consists of monitoring the validity of the solution against the problem. If you’re not satisfied with the results, come up with a new solution.
The best way to escape from your problem is by solving it. Don’t turn your back towards it; rather face is the best way you can. A problem will get only as big as you will make it. Approach it with a positive attitude and learn from it for your future. Every problem has a common solution. You and your attitude.
