Without the foundations of strong values illustrated by a vision to be undertaken by a mission, a person cannot be wholly successful. Without developing a mission, a person cannot identify, distinguish or explain his own self dream and goals. A personal mission statement forces you to think deeply about your life, clarify its purpose, and identify what is truly important to you. These also force you to clarify and express as briefly as possible your deepest values and aspirations. This personal mission statement imprints your values and purposes in your mind, so that they become a part of you. If we plumb deeply enough into our hearts, excavating deep down to the depths, invariably, we’ll find only one purpose-a mission, sitting firmly there. A mission against whom we measure the value of everything we do. This mission can be consciously assigned by ourselves, or we’ve unconsciously accepted someone else’s assignment to us.
Think of this mission as a tree. With many subsidiary branches, each with it’s own leaves and if nurtured fully, gives voluptuous fruits. But the main thing that must be nurtured and overlooks all these "mini missions" is the trunk. And this trunk has perhaps the most influence on our ability to be happy than almost anything else.
Here are some ways to create your personal mission statement:
• Identify past successes. These successes can be personal or professional. Look at the most common thing about these. These can be the motivation, the resulting things or even what got your started.
• Identify your core values. Outline the attributes that you believe best identifies who you are as well as your priorities. Identify which one of these is most important to you. You may even select a few values which can even have something common in them.
• Identify your goals. Take a deep look at your priorities in life and goals your have set for yourself. Listing your personal short term and long term goals are valuable here.
You may now have a vision of what your personal mission statement can be. You might portray a few of them, but that’s okay. Once you start putting them in your practical life, it will be clear to you what your real purpose is. Coming face to face with your personal mission statement is an act of self-discovery that can help us uncover things that we previously may not have known otherwise. These allow us to get to know ourselves better and discover our sense of purpose in life.
Having a mission to which you're committed will make you strong. By keeping your eye focused on the long-term ball of your life's purpose, short-term setbacks will have far less impact on your life-condition. But this requires you to have a long-term ball, one you believe in your heart is more important than anything else. This is why picking a great mission (as opposed to a mission of minor import) is so crucial. You must become aware of yours so you can either confirm it's what you think it should be or change it to something better. That way during tough times you can draw on your conscious commitment to it to sustain you.
